Guest Speaker, Madeline James

“1 Hour Tutorial to Building a Fantasy World”

Let’s build a setting for our fantasy novels... quickly!

It doesn’t always make sense to spend weeks or months building a full fantasy world for our books. Sometimes we don’t need a fully fleshed-out globe or plate tectonics... But that doesn’t mean that we can’t create something realistic, immersive, and deep in a short amount of time.

In this seminar, we are going to talk about creating a regional setting or kingdom for our story. We will take some inspiration from Earth’s patterns to achieve the climate and biomes we desire, place important landforms like rivers and mountains, and then work through cities/towns and population sizes. We will also briefly go over some core cultural/societal choices such as political systems, naming languages, religion, and history.

We will end with some additional resources you can utilize to take your setting to the next level if desired.

10am – 11am Session #5.1, Seminar

Guest Speaker, Katja Kaine with The Novel Factory

“Plan Your Novel with the Novel Writing Roadmap”

My name is Katja Kaine, and in early 2024, I secured a major six-figure deal with Penguin Random House for my debut YA novel, Blood of Gods and Girls, which will be launched in 2026. In this seminar, I will take writers through the process I use to write my novels, which I have broken down into 16 steps—with each step building organically on the last.

I have been writing for over fourteen years, and over that time, I have read countless books on craft and learned from experts, peers and readers. Writers who don’t know where to start writing, or who often find themselves getting 20,000 words into a novel and then hitting a wall, will come away with the proven system for reaching those magic words—the end.

Attendees will be given access to a free ebook of the 16 steps, complete with description, task and examples.

“Quills vs. Code: Writing in the Age of AI”

AI is reshaping the writing landscape, but should it replace human creativity? With NaNoWriMo’s recent AI stance and HarperCollins’ controversial move to sell authors’ works to AI systems, the writing community faces tough questions. In this seminar, I’ll share my experience navigating both sides of the AI debate—using it as a productivity tool in marketing while founding The Order of the Written Word, an anti-AI writing challenge focused on human-driven creativity.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the impact AI has on storytelling, practical strategies to protect human artistry, and a renewed sense of community. We’ll explore how we can push back against AI’s threat to creativity, showing that the future of writing lies in the hands of passionate, human creators.

Suffice it to say that although AI, large language models, and other tools can help, the human element shall forever be essential for not only a correct, but faithful translation. For the seminar, we’ll focus on the nuances between English and Spanish and share typical pitfalls and recommendations to do things right and ensure you get the best results possible.

“Sustainable Productivity: Adaptable Systems for a Creative Life that Actually Works”

For writers, sustainable productivity often feels out of reach. Between managing creative energy, everyday responsibilities, and life’s unexpected curveballs, many writers struggle with burnout.

This workshop will empower writers to break free from survival mode, learn systems that honor their reality, and make lasting space for the creative life they dream of living.

Melissa will guide writers through a practical, compassionate approach to time and task management tailored for the creative life. Participants will take away adaptable tools they can apply immediately—not rigid formulas that only work under “perfect” conditions.

Downloadable worksheets will be available for the workshop. As a freebie, attendees can sign up for an exclusive, downloadable Creative Productivity Starter Kit, featuring a set of printable templates and a short video guide to help them implement sustainable productivity systems after the conference.

“Writing in the Lines”

Practice using mandatory writing elements and letting your story spiral from there. This Workshop is the application of Chandra Arthur’s presentation on "Writing Short Fiction for Challenges." These contests have strict rules and writing skills must be on point. So, don’t be like me and submit a story without ensuring you’ve included all mandatory writing elements.

“Better Speaking for Better Reader Interactions”

The ability to speak well is just as important for an author today as being able to write well. Authors need to speak clearly when they meet readers or fellow industry professionals, when they work events, and when they create content online, such as videos. The fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias there is, if not the most common. So how can you become better at it? With practice, of course, but you need tools and guidance as well. Alexa Shay aims to give you that guidance and answer your questions.

Alexa Shay was a member of Toastmasters International, a public speaking and leadership organization, for seven years. During that time, she won first place in seven speech contests and placed in the top three in four others. An experienced speaker and mentor, Alexa wants to help you become a better speaker so that you can become better at promoting your work and yourself.

“Finding Time to Write with Young Kids”

Finding time to write as a busy parent can feel impossible, especially for stay-at-home parents juggling endless tasks and limited breaks. Indie romance author Alex Chrisco understands this struggle firsthand. Despite the chaos of parenting a toddler, Alex developed a system to balance writing and family life, leading to the successful publication of her debut novel.

Join Alex for a short presentation on practical strategies to carve out “golden pockets” of writing time in your busy schedule. Discover why nurturing your creativity can be a powerful reprieve from life’s demands and how to prioritize your passion amidst family obligations. After the talk, there will be an open Q&A to share challenges, ideas, and inspiration.

“Chill Subs vs. Submittable: Choosing the Right Manager for Literary Magazine Submissions”

Audiences will be taken on a walkthrough of both the Chill Subs platform and the Submittable platform, and I will show neat and helpful features on both the writer’s side and the publisher’s side of each platform, comparing the features available on both sites. I’ll go over which platforms perform better in certain areas such as submission tracking, statistics from publishers, sorting through listings, overall accessibility, value, and more. At the end, I’ll select an overall “winner” based on which platform I think has the best overall value, and then recommend one platform or the other for specific purposes (ie. if a writer is mainly looking for a more accessible platform, they should look into X platform as opposed to Y platform).

“Practical Magic:  How to Market and Sell Books That Break the Genre Mold”

Many authors struggle to market their books when they don’t fit neatly into a single genre. Traditional publishing and book marketing rely on clear categories—but what happens when your book blends multiple genres, bends expectations, or defies classification altogether?

In this presentation, we’ll explore a practical, real-world strategy for selling and marketing unconventional books, focusing on long-term audience building rather than short-term sales. I’ll share my own experience as an author who has successfully built a brand around multi-genre storytelling—without relying on traditional marketing methods.

Attendees will learn about the “Princess Bride” problem, positioning books for the right readers, alternative marketing strategies, building an engaged audience through storytelling conversations, and using curated group content, poetic voice, and creative excerpts to draw readers in.

“How to Survive in an AI-Saturated World”

AI is becoming omnipresent, and for many authors, this is a major issue. What can we do if AI will just replace us, right?

Well, you might be releaved to know, it's not as bad as all that.

At least for some.

In this presentation, I'll walk you through exactly what to do in order to survive, creatively and financially, in an AI-saturated world.

“Going Local: How to Grow Your Indie Author Career Through Your Community”

Publishing a book is only half the journey, getting it into readers' hands is the other. And sometimes, the best opportunities are closer to home than you think.

We'll explore practical strategies for getting your indie book into local bookstores, libraries, book festivals, and community events. I'll also share my personal experience—including the realities of being an introverted author navigating public events. (Spoiler: They’re terrifying!) So far, I’ve focused on getting my books into two indie bookstores while I complete my series before diving deeper into signings and larger events—and I’ll share why that slower approach might be the perfect fit for you, too.
