“How to Build a Book Blueprint Before You Start Writing”

Many first-time nonfiction authors start writing before they’ve fully defined their audience, structure, and goals. In this session, attendees will learn how to build a Book Blueprint before they start writing so they can create a stronger foundation for their manuscript from the beginning.

This presentation will walk through the key planning decisions that help writers gain clarity, stay focused, and avoid common mistakes that lead to stalled drafts and major rewrites later. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to approach their book with structure and intention before writing Chapter One.

“The Invisible Sales Tool: How Metadata Helps Readers Find Your Books”

Authors work hard to write, publish, and promote their books, but one of the most powerful discoverability tools is often overlooked: metadata.

Metadata helps retailers, libraries, search engines, and recommendation systems understand what a book is, who it is for, and where it belongs. When metadata is weak or incomplete, even a great book can become invisible to the readers who would love it most.

In this practical, author-friendly session, attendees will learn how metadata influences book discovery and which elements matter most, including titles, subtitles, descriptions, keywords, categories, series information, and contributor details. We’ll also explore common mistakes, simple fixes, and how to think like both a reader and a retailer.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to make their books easier to find and better positioned to reach the right readers.

Guest Speaker, Katja Kaine with The Novel Factory

“All My Novel Plotting Secrets Revealed”

I will show you the exact process I used to plan the novel that was snapped up in a major six-figure preempt by Penguin Random House. Using real examples from the major fantasy release Blood of Gods and Girls, I will give details of how I identify the five key story elements, weave them into a compelling plot based on in-depth analysis of the impact of structure on the human psyche, and expand that into an outline that allows me to complete my first draft in only four weeks.

I will demonstrate how I use Novel Factory software to keep track of complex novel data, get a god’s-eye view, and dig down into the granular details.

This is a unique chance to see behind the scenes of my process and learn how you can use these techniques in your own writing.

Attendees will receive an exclusive discount on Novel Factory software and access to an extract from the opening chapters of Blood of Gods and Girls.

“Designing Your Creative Year: A Plan That Survives Real Life”

The best-laid creative plans often fall apart when real life happens. Ever wish you could find a way to happen to life instead of life just happening to you?

In this session, writers and creators will learn a practical framework for designing an entire creative year around the realities of work, family, holidays, travel, health, seasonal energy shifts, and unexpected opportunities. Rather than forcing creative goals into an idealized schedule, attendees will learn how to create realistic plans for books, publishing, YouTube content, newsletters, launches, revisions, and other creative projects.

Participants will leave with a repeatable year-mapping system, strategies for aligning projects with periods of greater energy and availability, and tools for breaking large creative goals into manageable phases. Attendees will also receive worksheets and templates they can immediately use to plan their next creative year.

“How Authors Really Sell More Books”

There is no single marketing strategy that works for every author. What helps one writer sell thousands of books may do very little for another. The key is understanding the fundamental principles of book marketing and finding the approach that fits your goals, strengths, and audience.

In this session, we’ll explore the most common paths to author success, including social media marketing, content creation, building a loyal readership, and growing a profitable backlist. Drawing on insights from industry reports, real-world author case studies, and my experience as both a professional growth marketer and an author, I’ll break down what works, why it works, and how you can apply these strategies to your own career.

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your options and practical ideas for selling more books.

“Beyond the Algorithm: How Authors Sell More Books with YouTube & Email”

Most authors want more visibility, but visibility alone does not build a lasting author business. Dale L. “Bringing a Mechanical World to Life”

I'm interested in diving into the nuance of making a "mechanically heavy" world; where rules are consistent, in-depth, and motivated by cause and effect. This includes exploring what a "hard magic" versus "soft magic" system looks like and how to prevent these huge premises from bogging down a story with oversaturated exposition. The goal is to showcase the approach of writing one step at a time. Tease the reader with small mechanics before jumping directly into "mechanical injection."

Whether it be networked political structures, special runic sigil-crafting, or a fresh concept all on its own, there's a ton of creative enjoyment to be gained from writing tables, drawing diagrams, and crafting each little component detail by detail. And those concepts are enjoyable for readers to, when exposed correctly.

The first experience is extremely important for new readers; it's where the communicative relationship between the author and the reader is first established. This presentation will give you the ability to introduce complex systems, such as hard-magic systems, without overhelming readers. We'll dive in to when a hard-magic system is necessary for the story, and how they can be durived through sustenance rather than thick exposition, and when a soft magic system would better fit the story's theming and philosophy.

Guest Speaker, Shirley Jump

“The Emotional Blueprint Behind Every Great Novel”

Great stories do not start with plot alone. They start with characters who feel real, whose fears, flaws, desires, and emotional wounds shape every decision on the page.

In this workshop, New York Times bestselling author Shirley Jump shows writers how to uncover their characters’ deep emotional wounds and use them to build stronger internal plots, deeper emotion, and unforgettable story arcs. Drawing from the techniques behind more than 8 million books sold worldwide, Shirley teaches how emotional wounds shape goal, motivation, conflict, theme, and growth.

Attendees will learn how to identify a character’s emotional wounds, build stronger goal, motivation, and conflict, create believable emotional arcs, and turn backstory into emotion readers can feel.

Perfect for novelists in any genre, this workshop will help writers create fiction readers connect with deeply and remember long after the final page.

Many authors feel trapped in the cycle of chasing algorithms, posting constantly, and trying to stay visible on social media. But Pinterest offers a different approach, one built on long-term discoverability rather than short-term engagement.

In this practical, beginner-friendly session, bestselling author, writing educator, and Pinterest marketing instructor Melissa Bourbon will show authors how to use Pinterest as a powerful search engine for books, newsletters, blogs, and reader growth. Attendees will learn how Pinterest SEO works, what authors can pin even without a blog, and how to create evergreen content that continues working long after it’s published.

“From Idea to Outline: Building the Foundation for Your Novel”

"From Idea to Outline: Building the Foundation for Your Novel" is a practical, encouraging seminar for writers who have a story idea they’re excited about but aren’t sure how to turn it into a clear, compelling novel plan.

Many writers jump into drafting with a big, exciting idea, only to get stuck when the story becomes tangled, the protagonist feels unclear, or the middle starts to sag. This presentation gives attendees a simple, repeatable framework for building a stronger foundation before they draft, so they can move forward with more confidence and direction.

In this seminar, attendees will learn how to clarify the deeper point of their story, simplify their big idea into a usable core concept, identify the protagonist who can best carry the narrative, connect the opening and ending of the novel, and use an Inside Outline to make sure each scene has meaning and emotional resonance.

Each step will be taught through examples from popular stories, making the concepts easy to understand and immediately applicable. Attendees will walk away knowing how to evaluate whether their story idea has enough substance to become a full novel, how to avoid common outlining mistakes, and how to begin shaping their idea into a draft-ready plan.

As a free resource, attendees will also be invited to download Is Your Novel Idea Good Enough?, a practical worksheet designed to help writers test whether their novel idea is strong enough to sustain a full draft.

“Making Your Content More Accessible for Better Engagement”

A lot of content creators don’t give much thought to the accessibility of their content, which automatically alienates a whole group of people. Even people without disabilities might skip your page if your content is hard to digest. When you make your content more accessible, it not only makes things easier for your viewers, but it also increases the likelihood of engagement.

Working to make things more accessible benefits everyone. For example, adding captions helps parents who’re watching videos while putting kids to sleep. Choosing high-contrast colors makes things more legible at first glance. If it’s hard to hear, see, or read your content, people will swipe right away.

In this presentation, I will share some basic tips and tricks for making your content more accessible, which will increase its quality and your likelihood of attracting followers.

With a few tricky techniques, you can turn your rough draft into a story polished enough to make your fans beg for more.

4:30pm – 5pm Keynote Speech 2026

Keynote Speaker, Shelby Leigh with Marketing by Shelby

“Start Before You're Ready: How Writers Can Build an Audience by Showing Up Imperfectly”

What if the moment you’ve been waiting for—the right platform, the right following, the right version of yourself—is actually the thing keeping you from the readers who are already looking for you?

In this keynote, Shelby Leigh takes writers back to where it all started: posting poems anonymously on the internet with no plan, no platform, and no idea it would become the foundation of a 500k+ audience, 60k+ books sold, and a career built on genuine connection. What she discovered along the way is that writers who wait until they’re “ready” to show up are waiting for something that never comes. The ones who start anyway are the ones who find their people.

Equal parts personal story and inspiration, this talk challenges writers to stop treating visibility as something they must earn, and begin seeing it as an extension of the voice, story, and connection they already carry.

By the end, writers will feel encouraged to stop waiting for the perfect moment and begin showing up with authenticity, courage, and the confidence that the people who need their words are already out there just waiting for them to begin.

Perfect for writers at any stage who have been waiting for the right moment to show up online, share their work, and begin connecting more authentically with the people who need to hear their voice.

The book wasn't the problem. The strategy behind it was.

“The Secret to Finishing Your Book Isn't Motivation”

Motivation comes and goes, but successful writers continue creating anyway. So what separates writers who finish their books from those who abandon them?

Drawing from years of experience as a writing coach and founder of a daily writing community, J.L. Kauffman explores the real factors behind long-term creative success. This session examines why motivation fades, how consistency is built, and the roles accountability, community, and sustainable systems play in helping writers make progress even when inspiration disappears.

Attendees will learn practical strategies for overcoming procrastination, creating a sustainable writing routine, and maintaining momentum through the challenges of drafting and revision. Whether you’re working on your first manuscript or your fifth, you’ll leave with actionable tools to help you build a writing practice that lasts and finally finish the stories that matter most.

Guest Speaker, Dorian Maras

“How to Design Your Book So It Sells: Lessons Learned from Testing Over 1,000 Book Titles and Covers”

What’s the difference between a book that gets clicked and one that gets ignored? Usually, it’s the cover and title, and most authors never find out until it’s too late.

In this seminar, Booktest.io founder and 7-figure KDP publisher Dorian Maras shares a data-driven system for designing and testing book covers and titles that convert browsers into buyers on Amazon. Drawing from his experience testing more than a thousand titles and covers with real readers, Dorian will walk you through the framework he uses to consistently out-click competitors in crowded niches.

You’ll walk away knowing:

  1. Why most book covers fail before a single reader opens them and the simple design principles that fix it.

  2. How to test your cover and title before you publish, so you can go live with confidence instead of hope.

  3. The four variables that move the needle on click-through rate and which ones are almost never worth testing.

  4. How testing changes outcomes through real case studies, including recreations of famous title tests such as Tim Ferriss’s process for naming The 4-Hour Workweek.

Whether you’re launching your first book or trying to revive a catalog that has stopped selling, you’ll leave with a clear, repeatable process you can apply immediately. Attendees will also receive free access to a simulation demo of Dorian’s book-testing tool so they can experience the process firsthand.

“From Author to Empire: 100 Ways to Monetize Your Story”

Michael Evans has written 12+ sci-fi novels, built a streaming platform for authors, and worked inside one of the largest creator operations in the world. In Beyond the Book, he shares the framework he wishes he’d had: 100 ways fiction authors are turning their stories into films, memberships, merch lines, licensing deals, and transmedia empires.

You’ll leave with a map, not a motivational speech, and at least one idea you can act on before you get home.

“Build a Writing Routine That Doesn’t Fall Apart: A Live Workshop for Writers”

You’ve tried the 5 a.m. starts. You’ve built the ideal routine. And then life happened. The routine fell apart, and you keep trying to force it to work.

This hands-on workshop is for writers who are tired of feeling like they just aren’t disciplined enough and are ready to build a practice that works for them.

Using an evolving framework developed through years of experiments, including trialing the routines of authors like Brandon Sanderson, Stephen King, Ursula K. Le Guin, V. E. Schwab, and more, we’ll work through what a sustainable writing routine actually requires, how to diagnose whether you’re depleted or avoiding writing, which can feel identical from the inside but need completely different responses, and how to design a minimum viable practice you can stick with when life gets chaotic.

You’ll leave with a plan, ready to take on your manuscript and writing goals, and a free PDF guide to take with you.

“Write Like an Actor: Using Performance Techniques to Create More Compelling Characters”

What if writers could approach their characters the way actors do?

Actors don't simply memorize lines. They explore motivation, objectives, obstacles, subtext, physical behavior, emotional reactions, and the things a character isn't saying. Writers can use those same performance techniques to create characters who feel more authentic, distinctive, and alive on the page.

In this practical, interactive session, actress and author Rita Slanina shares techniques from the actor's toolkit that writers can apply to character development, dialogue, emotional scenes, and revision. Attendees will learn how to identify what a character wants in a scene, uncover the subtext beneath their dialogue, develop distinctive character voices, and use action and physical behavior to reveal emotion rather than simply telling readers what a character feels.

Through examples and short writing exercises, participants will have the opportunity to put these techniques into practice and experience their scenes from a performer's perspective.

No acting experience is required. Writers simply need a willingness to look at their characters from a slightly different angle.

“Story Grid or Plot Grid? Mastering Google Sheets for Your Developmental Edit”

My presentation will be on the understanding, building, and executing of Coyne’s Story Grid and Plot Grids: how they’re similar, how they’re different, and how each can be utilized to self-analyze your completed first draft.

In this pre-recorded seminar, with live Q&A hosted at the end, I will walk the attendee through:

  1. The core elements of Plot Grids and Story Grids and how you can use one as the foundation of the other

  2. What the building process for these spreadsheets looks like, with step-by-step instructions to create their own

  3. How to utilize charts and formulas that already exist in Google Sheets to take a step back and analyze their story

  4. What filling out your own Plot and Story Grids will tell you and, more importantly, what they won’t

  5. Why the developmental edit is the most important part of storytelling: letting the reader see into the heart of the writer

This process will take any beginning author and turn them into an expert at developmental self-editing. Attendees will walk away with their own free blank copies of a Story Grid and a Plot Grid built in Google Sheets and a working knowledge of how to leverage spreadsheets to their success.

“How to Finish Your Book When You’ve Started 12 and Abandoned All of Them”

If your Google Drive looks like a graveyard of half-written novels, chaotic outlines, and “Chapter One (FINAL FINAL)” files, this workshop is for you. Whether your brain is beautifully neurospicy, delightfully distractible, or simply overflowing with too many ideas, you can finish a book and, shocking, I know, you might even have an advantage. Creative, nonlinear thinkers are often in need of a finishing system that works with their brain, not against it.

In this high-energy, judgment-free workshop, we’ll break down why writers abandon manuscripts and how to finally complete the stories you care about. You’ll learn how to harness your idea-hopping tendencies, build momentum even when motivation crashes, and create a flexible, even ADHD-friendly, book-finishing framework that actually sticks.

We’ll explore the psychology of finishing, the science of creative focus, and the practical tools that turn “perpetual drafter” energy into “holy crap, I finished my book” energy.

As a bonus, participants will receive a downloadable Book Finisher’s Toolkit, including worksheets, checklists, and a momentum-tracking guide to support their writing long after the conference ends.

Whether you never created an outline or threw the plan out the window somewhere along the way, revision tips meant for plotters won’t work for you. In this session, you’ll learn a simple 4-step process for revising the roughest of rough drafts without getting lost in the weeds or ending up with a story that still feels incomplete three drafts later, plus tips for navigating the most common pantser pitfalls. If you’ve ever stared at a messy draft with no idea what to do next, this session is for you.
